This year’s 1st, January 24th, 2026, TKO karate tournament circuit was the Showdown in H Town Martial Arts Championship. It was held at the ULH Sports Complex, 331 United Leuva Cir. in Houston, Texas. This is a yearly championship, and it typically marks the first Go-TO tournament, a tradition it has upheld for quite some time. I have attended this tournament since its inception into the TKO karate league circuit and have observed that its turnout is exceptional, largely because it takes place near the beginning of the year. The amazing Robert Montifar was the producer of this early extravaganza in sports martial arts, and it has elevated many of the participants throughout the many years of both the tournament and the TKO league. Robert Montifar, in partnership with Wayne Nguyen, has consistently produced an outstanding tournament that stands as a stepping stone for new and upcoming champions, both young and adult.
This tournament is unique in that it is centered around the Chinese New Year and features the spectacular lion dance to kick off the yearly proceedings. The lion dance symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and the driving away of evil spirits. Performers mimic a lion’s movements to bring blessings, and the tradition of “Fai chun”—which means good fortune—adds a special touch to the event, offering positive wishes to the community. This vibrant performance not only energizes the audience but also represents the hope for a successful and prosperous year ahead.
The event was well attended and had a good crowd of competitors that came from all over the state of Texas to vie for the top positions in the year-end WKO World Championships and the TKO State Championships as well as to compete for the prestigious Top Gun title in their respective group and the coveted championship ring. Many divisions were run throughout the day, including sparring, kata (forms), ground fighting, stick fighting, breaking, grappling, kickboxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The variety of sports martial arts styles represented truly made the event an extravaganza.
It was an exciting occasion, with numerous competitors taking home 1st place champion rings and earning the opportunity to compete in the multi-tiered grand championships. These included beginner division grand championships, intermediate division grand championships, advanced division championships, and featured junior black belt and adult black belt grand championships. This format is unique in that it allows all age categories and ranks to compete for a grand championship trophy, and in the case of adults, the chance to win both money and trophies. The inclusivity and competitive spirit of the event set it apart as a highlight of the martial arts calendar in Texas.
The tournament ran smoothly with top judges from the TKO, as well as many past champions officiating, which contributed greatly to the success and credibility that the Showdown in H Town has always enjoyed. Their expertise and commitment ensured that every match was adjudicated fairly and professionally, reinforcing the event’s reputation as a must-attend on the martial arts circuit. The event culminated with the highly anticipated grand championships, which once again showcased the junior beginner, junior intermediate, advanced, adult under-belt, junior black belt, and adult black belt grand championship divisions.

First up were the junior beginner grand championships, where Kyron Rodriguez pulled out an impressive win for the young competitors in the beginner divisions, setting an inspiring tone for the rest of the day. The junior intermediate division was also fiercely contested, with outstanding performances from Gamma Nguyen, Milan Polar, Daniella Padrone, Kira Allison, and Mahasaa Padmanabhan, each demonstrating skill and sportsmanship that captivated both judges and spectators alike.
The junior advanced division was also well attended, featuring standout performances from Derek Hayson, William Ellis, Gabby Nguyen, Ava Shotlow, and Kairi Herrera. These talented young competitors truly gave it their all, raising the energy and excitement of the event. Ultimately, it was Gabby Nguyen who emerged victorious, taking home the grand champion award for the junior advanced group.
In the adult under belt division, Jennifer Clayton delivered an unforgettable bow staff kata that left the audience in awe. Her skill and poise were remarkable—an inspiration to all, especially considering her years of experience in the martial arts. Notably, her son, a black belt himself, also showcased his expertise with the staff. Jennifer’s performance earned her the grand championship title in the adult under belt category.
The junior black belt group brought together top contenders: Lily McConnell, Keto Patel, Silas Smith, Chloe Groghary, and Topher Robertson. This division was fiercely competitive, with each athlete displaying impressive technique and determination. After a thrilling showdown, Topher Robertson was crowned the 2026 Showdown in H Town grand champion for the junior black belt category.
The event concluded with the adult black belt grand championships, which featured an incredible roster of martial artists: Jameson Dale, Brady Clayton, past champion Thomas Signs, William Diaz, and the remarkable Johnnie Murphy, who showcased his sword skills. In a gripping finale, Bradley Clayton—Jennifer Clayton’s son, newly eligible for the adult division—delivered a stellar performance. He clinched the grand championship award and the accompanying prize money, proving himself a formidable talent and following in his mother’s illustrious footsteps.
This concluded another amazing TKO event and was a great 2026 starter event that featured amazing talent, great judging, and a host of events that covered the gamut in the martial arts styles along with some memorable performances. The sense of camaraderie among participants, families, and organizers was evident throughout the day, further highlighting the spirit of the TKO community. As the Showdown in H Town sets the tone for the rest of the season, anticipation is already building for the next round of competitions and the remarkable achievements still to come.
