This year’s Houston Internationals Karate Tournament was hosted by Grand Master Chambers and was held at the downtown Houston Tennyson YMCA on May 8th and 9th it was an amazing display of talent from the two state organizations that included Texas and Oklahoma.
The event brought together some of the finest martial arts talent from Texas and Oklahoma, with a large and enthusiastic crowd showing up to support this long-standing tournament. Many well-known martial artists from both states were in attendance, helping create an atmosphere that felt like an exciting celebration of skill, tradition, and community. The tournament was proudly described as “Christmas in May” because of its generous bicycle giveaway for all first-place children’s and youth winners. That achievement alone was remarkable, especially given the number of supporters, families, competitors, and talented individuals who came together from across Texas and Oklahoma to make the event memorable.
The tournament featured a wide variety of events, including breaking, weapons, sparring, grappling, and musical forms, giving competitors of many different styles and skill sets an opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Many new champions were crowned, and an army of family and loved ones were there to support their champions,
This event has long been considered one of the top Texas AOK events of the year, and throughout the Texas AOK’s 48-year history, it has been connected to some of the most prominent and accomplished martial artists the sport has ever known. Legendary martial artist such as Chuck Norris, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, Mike Stone, and many other living legends have been part of its rich legacy. In its heyday, the organization stood as one of the largest and most respected martial arts organizations in the country, and its continued survival over the years speaks to the strength of its tradition, leadership, and loyal community of competitors and supporters.

The grand championships were held in a second-floor ballroom that provided suitable space for the crowd to gather and enjoy a close-up view of the action. A series of grand championship divisions were held, including both adult and youth divisions, giving many of the tournament’s top competitors an opportunity to compete for special prizes, recognition, and cash awards.
In the youth forms grand championship, several talented competitors came together for the opportunity to win a special prize and cash award. Victor Serena captured the combined advanced and youth black belt division grand championship while Kyron Rodriguez won the younger age children’s intermediate and beginner division grand championship.
The adult forms grand championship came down to an exciting showdown between Sam Brumme and Jamie Sampson, two of the top performers at the tournament. After a strong display of skill and determination, Jamie Sampson emerged as the adult black belt forms grand champion.
The adult black belt sparring grand championship featured a thrilling final match between DeMarcus Bynum and David Chambers. The fight went back and forth, keeping the crowd fully engaged, before DeMarcus Bynum pulled ahead to claim the championship and the cash prize. Ashlon Smith ended up in a battle with veteran Daniel Perez and managed to pull out the senior men’s black belt grand championship
Overall, it was a great tournament with an outstanding turnout and an electric atmosphere. The event was memorable because of the talented martial artists, dedicated families, and loyal supporters who came together to make it a first-class celebration of martial arts in the region.
